SMS Sender Types in Prokeep

This article explains the types of SMS senders used by Prokeep, how they function, and when each type is used.

SMS Sender Types Used by Prokeep

Prokeep uses 10DLC (10-Digit Long Code) and Toll-Free Numbers as SMS sender types. Each has unique benefits and is used in specific situations depending on the customer’s setup and usage volume.

10DLC (10-Digit Long Code)

What is 10DLC?
A 10DLC is a standard 10-digit phone number (e.g., 555-123-4567) enabled for SMS. It’s registered with mobile carriers to support business messaging and is designed for higher volume and more reliable delivery than traditional long codes.

How it’s used in Prokeep:

  • Prokeep uses 10DLC numbers for customer-facing communication.

  • Each Prokeep location is assigned a unique 10DLC number for texting.

  • These numbers are verified and registered with carriers to ensure compliance and deliverability.

Benefits:

  • Recognizable, local-looking numbers that can build trust with customers.

  • Improved throughput and reduced filtering compared to unregistered numbers.

  • Supports two-way conversations.

Limitations:

  • 10DLC registration requires detailed business and campaign information. The Implementation team manages this process during setup, and the Support team takes over once the account is established.

  • Carriers may throttle or block messages if the 10DLC is not properly registered.

Toll-Free Numbers

What is a toll-free number?
Toll-free numbers (e.g., 800, 888, 877) are phone numbers that are free for the customer to call or text. These numbers are also capable of sending and receiving SMS/MMS messages.

How it’s used in Prokeep:

  • Primarily used for Broadcast Text Messaging - when a business needs to send informational or promotional messages from a centralized number to multiple contacts at once.

  • We can provision toll-free numbers for conversational SMS/MMS messaging if a customer’s primary business line is toll-free

Benefits:

  • Nationwide recognition and trust.

  • Suitable for medium to high messaging volumes.

Limitations:

  • Less “local” than a 10DLC, which may feel less personal to some customers.

  • Throughput may be lower than 10DLC for certain use cases.

How Prokeep Determines Which Sender Type to Use

  • Default for New Locations: Prokeep provisions a 10DLC number for each new location to allow for localized, two-way communication.

  • Default for Broadcast Text Messaging: If an account setup includes Broadcast Text Messaging, Prokeep will assign one TFN per account.**
